Pakistan Is One of The Top Solar Market Globally

Yes, it is correct that Pakistan has become one of the top solar-importing countries. Pakistan is now looking towards solar panels, no matter which category they are all in. All categories are looking to install solar on their rooftops, and they are looking to install solar panels as early as possible if they have the desired funds available to install them on the rooftop.

It is reported that Pakistan alone will import 17 gigawatts worth of solar panels in 2024, which is a significant amount, as some countries' total production of electricity is only 10 gigawatts, which is a significant figure in its own right. It was reported that Pakistan will only have 321 MW of solar power in 2021; however, the number increased to 4,124 MW in December 2024. It is expected that the number will increase further as we are now in April 2025.

Moreover, solar panel demand is high because the grid supply of electricity is very expensive, and many people are unable to afford grid system electricity due to extremely high costs, and another reason is that solar panels are somewhat cheap in Pakistan due to the government providing subsidies for importing solar panels in Pakistan. Due to the extremely high demand for solar panels in Pakistan, the government of Pakistan had to revise the rate of net metering.

Pakistan becoming the top importer of solar panels is a positive sign for the government, as many people are adopting green energy; however, it has demerits as well. IPPs' electricity consumption would be decreased, and it would create another issue for the government. Moreover, the government has recently decreased the prices of electricity to encourage high consumption of power.
